Symptom Combination

Arm Pain and Weakness: Causes, Conditions & When to See a Doctor

Arm pain combined with weakness may indicate acute MI, cervical radiculopathy, TIA, or thoracic outlet syndrome. When weakness is sudden and unilateral, stroke must be excluded immediately. When bilateral with exertional onset, cardiac ischemia with sympathetic dysfunction is the priority.

Possible Causes of Arm Pain and Weakness

Conditions that commonly cause both symptoms together

  1. 1Cervical disc herniation (C5–C7 radiculopathy) causing pain + weakness
  2. 2Acute MI with referred arm pain and fatigue/weakness
  3. 3TIA or stroke with contralateral arm weakness
  4. 4Thoracic outlet syndrome compressing brachial plexus
  5. 5Peripheral neuropathy with painful dysesthesias

Emergency Red Flags

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these

Sudden unilateral arm weakness with facial drooping (stroke)
Weakness of grip developing within minutes
Arm weakness + chest pressure (cardiac ischemia)
Bilateral arm weakness with neck pain (cervical myelopathy)
Weakness progressing over hours without improvement

When to See a Doctor

Schedule a medical consultation if you notice these signs

Sudden arm weakness must trigger stroke assessment immediately (FAST protocol)
Acute onset of arm pain + weakness = emergency; call 112/911
Chronic gradual arm weakness + pain warrants urgent neurology referral
Do not wait to see if symptoms resolve spontaneously
