Corticosteroids are synthetic versions of cortisol that exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. They affect virtually every body system and have numerous clinical applications.
Used for inflammatory and autoimmune conditions including asthma, COPD, allergic reactions, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and as replacement therapy in adrenal insufficiency.
Short courses are generally safe. Long-term use causes significant side effects. Never stop high-dose or long-term corticosteroids abruptly — risk of adrenal crisis.
