Benzodiazepines enhance the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor, producing sedative, anxiolytic, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. They are effective but carry significant risks of dependence with prolonged use.
Used short-term for acute anxiety, panic attacks, acute seizures, alcohol withdrawal, procedural sedation, and insomnia. Not recommended for long-term use due to dependence risk.
Use for the shortest possible duration. Do not stop abruptly after regular use. Do not combine with other CNS depressants including alcohol.
