Antiepileptics (also called anticonvulsants) reduce the frequency and severity of seizures through various mechanisms including sodium channel blockade, GABA enhancement, calcium channel modulation, and synaptic vesicle protein binding.
Used to prevent seizures in epilepsy, and in some cases for neuropathic pain, bipolar disorder, and migraine prophylaxis.
Never stop antiepileptics abruptly — this can trigger status epilepticus. Regular blood monitoring may be required. Report any rash immediately.
