Nicardipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels and reduces cardiac workload, used to treat hypertension, angina, and certain arrhythmias.
Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) prevent calcium ions from entering vascular smooth muscle and cardiac cells, causing vasodilation and, for some agents, reducing heart rate and contractility.
Dihydropyridine CCBs (amlodipine, nifedipine) are used mainly for hypertension and angina. Non-dihydropyridine CCBs (diltiazem, verapamil) also slow heart rate and are used for atrial fibrillation and SVT.
Ankle swelling is common with dihydropyridines. Non-dihydropyridines must not be combined with beta blockers due to heart block risk.
